Pretoria - Another body has been found in Eersterus in what the community says is the result of the prevalence of drugs in their neighbourhood.

Residents gathered at the open veld near Nantes sector after the body of a young man was discovered. He was said to have been robbed and strangled.

Jacomina Moore, sector leader for Nantes, said she was concerned at the growing crime in their area of late.

“Drug abuse and crime are getting out of hand. Now dead bodies are turning up every so often. The police and councillors have to do something about this area soon because schoolchildren and people on their way to work pass through here every day,” she said.

“This veld needs to be cleared up as it provides the perfect cover for criminals at night and during the early hours of the morning,â€ù said Moore.

Eersterus police spokesman Sergeant Sam Shivambu confirmed they were notified at about 6.45am that the body of a man had been found lying in the veld.

“Police officers found a male body around the age of 28 to 31 years lying face down.

“Paramedics were called in and the man was confirmed dead on the scene,” he said.

“We don’t know what the motive for the murder was but we can confirm that he was found with his pockets pulled out and shoes missing.

“No cellphone or any form of identification was found. Preliminary reports indicate that the young man was strangled to death but a post mortem will be conducted,” said Shivambu.

The spokesman confirmed that the body of a woman was found six months ago but said it seemed unlikely it was the same people as the modus operandi was different.

“We do not rule out the possibility that it could be the same people as investigations are still in the primary stage.

“We urge any persons with any information to please contact the Eersterus police,” said Shivambu.

Member of the Concerned Parents Association of Eersterus, Desiree Fisher, said they were dismayed with the recent discovery as it now brought the number of deaths in the community to 50 over the past few years.

It was worrying that the murders were continuing despite the president’s visit to the area last August, she said.
