Cape Town - An attempted cash-in-transit heist took place near the Cape Town International Airport on Monday morning, Western Cape police said.
Captain Frederick van Wyk said security guards picked up money from the airport in the early hours of the morning. Airport security staff escorted them onto the N2 highway.
A white Mercedes-Benz began following the cash van and rammed it at the R300 offramp, causing it to overturn.
“The attackers started to shoot at the security van. The security personnel returned fire and the attackers fled the scene on foot, leaving their vehicle behind,” Van Wyk said.
No injuries were reported and no money was taken from the van. - Sapa
