Cape Town - Controversial ANC Western Cape executive member Andile Lili has been arrested for failing to appear in court on two separate occasions and will spend the next seven days behind bars.

This emerged when Lili appeared in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court after a warrant was issued for him when he failed to appear on January 29 and Tuesday respectively. Lili, a leading figure in the “poo protests” that rocked the city in 2014, was to have appeared on charges of incitement. He and his three co-accused, Antonia Langenhoven, Shafiek Phillips and Lizo Jamela, each of whom were present for the two previous court dates, are in court over allegedly inciting Ses’khona People’s Rights Movement supporters to kill criminals who rob and rape.

Lili made a brief appearance on Friday, and the matter was postponed to next Friday.

Ses’khona spokesman Sithembele Majova said Lili’s arrest was a “ploy by the courts to undermine our organisation”. He said the courts “should have known that Lili was appearing in another court case at the Khayelitsha Magistrate’s Court on January 29, and that is why Lili could not appear in Bellville”.

Prosecutor in Friday’s case, advocate Louie van Wyk, confirmed Lili would appear again on Friday for a warrant inquiry.
