Johannesburg - Police have launched an investigation into allegations that the son of crime activist and head of news and current affairs at Primedia has access to a police radio.

Also being investigated were allegations that Yusuf Abramjee’s son and nephew, who are police reservists at the National Investigation Unit headed by top cop Lieutenant- General Vineshkumar Moonoo, may have leaked sensitive police information to him.

Abramjee is head of news and current affairs at the media house that owns Radio 702, and also a Crime Line and LeadSA leader.

National police spokesman Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo said on Thursday morning they were also looking into whether Abramjee’s son was illegally in possession of a police radio and if he used it illegally.

He said further that national police commissioner General Riah Phiyega has since ordered for the radio to be confiscated because he used it while off duty.

“Because of the nature of the work done by these reservists, I humbly request that their identities not be revealed,” said Naidoo.

When called for comment on Thursday morning, Abramjee strongly denied the allegations that his relatives leaked police information to him.

He said he used his experience and network of contacts over his many years in the industry to receive information.

“I have been a journalist for over 20 years and I have my own sources that provide me with information.

“I don’t need to get information from my family and friends,” he said.

In response to queries on whether he was aware that his son was in possession of a police radio, Abramjee said that was a matter for the police to handle.

“As a police reservist, I’m sure he would have a police radio, but if it is true, it is up to the police to investigate and take action,” he said.
