Kia announces turbocharged hot hatch

Kia has never been a name to pop up when you're throwing around acronyms like GTI and ST in a conversation, but that should change next year.

Kia has just released a design sketch of its Pro_cee'd GT that will be unleashed upon world markets during the second quarter of 2013.

They haven't given us much information to go on, but their concise release does confirm what we've suspected all along - that Kia's hot hatch will be powered by the Hyundai group's new 1.6-litre turbopetrol engine.

The direct injection engine will be mated to a six-speed manual gearbox, Kia says, without mentioning any possibility of a dual-clutch shifter.

However, no power outputs have been confirmed and it's not all that easy to predict either.

The Hyundai Veloster is sold with a version of this engine in some markets and while all variations are good for 265Nm of torque, the UK version offers just 137kW while the US-market engine is credited with 150kW.

For now we'll just have to trust that Kia is choosing the most exciting tuning option possible.

We'll also have to trust that the production GT will have an exciting styling package to set it apart from its tamer siblings and some useful suspension modifications to give it some dynamic headway in the hotly contested hot hatch market.
