Johannesburg - Honda South Africa has ditched plans to import the NSX hybrid supercar as it would be too expensive.
The second-generation of this iconic sports machine was to have been launched here in the middle of this year, but the recent decline in the rand’s value would have pushed the car’s price up to around R5.5-million which makes it unviable for this country, says Honda SA spokesman Graham Eagle.
To put that into perspective, it would have been far more expensive than rivals like the Audi R8, Porsche 911 Turbo and Mercedes-AMG GT which sell for between R1.7-million and R3-million.
Honda NSX not coming to SA anymore
The long-awaited successor to the original NSX unveiled back in 1990, the two-seater coupé had its world unveiling at last year’s Detroit Motor Show sporting an enticing hybrid powetrain: a 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6 engine paired with three electric motors for a combined output of 429kW.
