Bespoke BMW gets haute-couture flair

The world of bespoke motor styling is by definition a very small one, dominated by a few top European names - and sometimes it's not a bad idea to rattle a few cages by collaborating with somebody from a different but equally rarefied sector of the design world.

Which is why this elegantly understated BMW Individual 7 Series in cream, pale grey and silver was styled by Indonesian-borne fashion designer Didit Hediprasetyo, with his characteristic lightness of touch and attention to detail, and built by the BMW Individual coachworks to reflect his sweeping concepts of luxury.

Paris-based Hediprasetyo studied fashion design at the Parsons School for Design in New York and Paris; he won a Silver Thimble Award in 2006 and went on to found his own fashion label in 2010.

LAVENDER SKY

Hediprasetyo says the colour scheme was inspired by the image of a lavender sky at sunset in a desert landscape. Pastel tones dominate, with pale metallic grey paint on the outside and silk grey with contrasting platinum piping for the full leather interior.

The pale grey theme continues in the fine nappa leather and alcantara finishes of the head-lining, the A, B and C pillars, the sun visors and the rear shelf. Interior trim elements in piano black provide a strong contrast, as do the specially made floor-mats, lined with black ostrich leather.

The designer's logo is embossed into the leather of the head restraints, while two cushions in platinum grey ostrich leather provide extra comfort for rear-seat passengers. A fitted refrigerator box in the back and the champagne-flute holders in the rear centre armrest enable passengers to enjoy their bubbly at the perfect temperature.

(VERY) LIMITED EDITION

Folding document tables lined with silk grey leather takes care of the paperwork, while screens in the back of the front head restraints provide internet access and entertainment for rear-seat passengers.

The final touches? A dog basket finished in silk grey leather and alcantara, and a vanity compartment built into the head-lining - and we don't think anybody at BMW would ever have thought of those.

Only five BMW Individual 7 Series by Didit Hediprasetyo will be made, each with its colour scheme and appointments tailored to the customer's requirements like a haute couture garment.
