Cape Town - The State of the Nation Address is a great opportunity for politicians to show off their fashionable side, and this year they did not disappoint.

The Daily Voice roped in three fashion experts to give their opinion on the style of the nation.

Our panel - Zilin Ayoki, Emogen Moore, and Laylah Zokufa Khan - loved the African themed outfits, but also gave thumbs up to some Western frocks.

In a surprise move, the panel agrees that the belle of the ball was undisputedly President Jacob Zuma’s youngest wife Gloria Bongekile Ngema who stunned in a figure hugging silver and black lacy creation, showing off her curves to perfection.

“Her dress suits her age, and her hair and make up were on point. She looked the part for the red carpet, a look you will see at the Oscars,” says the panel, applauding.

But there was no such praise for the Prez.

“Zuma looks tired and depressed, but at least blink sy bles,” reckons Emogen.

The first to arrrive on the red carpet last night were the always well-heeled Public Protector Thuli Madonsela, who wore a lovely bright yellow floor length gown.

“Yellow looks nice on black, sy’s top ten material, daai Thuli,” says Laylah.

But Zilin felt Thuli was just a tad too long in the tooth to carry off such a vibrant, youthful colour.

“She’s too old for it,” she moans.

The ladies all felt Western Cape Premier Helen Zille needed a fairy godmother for this event.

“Zille is Black Widow as expected, but die hare lyk mock,” says Zilin, or in plain speak, Zille lyk lelik, but at least lyk haar hare mooi.

And could there be trouble in Mandela paradise already?

Thembu Chief Mandla Mandela, who last week got hitched to Cape Flats meisie Rabia Clarke, arrived with his stunning third wife Mbali Makhathini.

The couple were uitgevat in matching traditional Xhosa outfits of mustard and black leather.

“Rabia wouldn’t look lekker in tradional African wear anyway,” says Emogen.

The panel were also not surprised to see EFF leader Julius Malema in his trademark red overalls.

“I knew Malema was gonna wear his Valentine's Day suit,” says a resigned looking Zilen.

Premier of the Northern Cape Sylvia Lucas was applauded for her do.

“Sylvia se hair piece maak Clarence,” says Zilin.
