Johannesburg - A new Cosatu deputy general secretary will be announced on Thursday at the federation’s 12th national congress, which entered its fourth and final day in Midrand.

On Wednesday, Cosatu members voted for their chosen candidate through a secret ballot.

The federation’s secretary in North West, Solly Phetoe, and Oscar Phaka, the deputy general secretary of the Democratic Nurses Organisation of SA, contested the top position.

Delegates at the congress were expected to spend most of the day debating a number of resolutions proposed by affiliates.

The Food and Allied Workers Union had threatened to argue that the absence of Numsa, which was expelled from the federation, was an impediment to unity.

Meanwhile, delegates debated resolutions on maternity and paternity leave benefits, the state of Telkom and the South African Post Office.
