Durban - About 8 000 members of the Congress of SA Trade Unions (Cosatu) converged on Durban’s Curries Fountain Stadium on Sunday for the trade union federation’s Workers Day rally.

African National Congress secretary general Gwede Mantashe is expected to address the workers later on Sunday.

The rally kicked off late after a march from Gugu Dlamini Gardens to the stadium started late.

There was a festive atmosphere outside the stadium before Mantashe and the marchers arrived. Vendors outside the stadium carried out a brisk trade selling food and ANC paraphernalia.

Apart from Mantashe, Deputy Public Works Minister Jeremy Cronin, ANC eThekwini regional chairwoman Zandile Gumede, and several senior Cosatu members were present at the event.
