Durban - The KwaZulu-Natal Treasury has relaxed the ban on the hiring of musicians and performing artists to entertain at government events.

The musicians were axed earlier this year as part of cost-cutting measures by the provincial government, but the move sparked an outcry in some quarters, with the ANC Youth League this week demanding a reprieve.

On Thursday, the Provincial Treasury said there was now a revised list of cost-cutting measures after a review by the Provincial Executive Council in August and September. It said a circular had since been released saying musicians and other performing artists could be sourced from a database administered by the Department of Arts and Culture.

“Arts and Culture will ensure the rate charged by the musicians and performing artists falls in line with the rates set out in provincial government’s department honoraria and special payment policy”.

According to the circular, the artists were to be selected by the department and paid by the department or public entity requesting their services.

“Provincial Treasury will ensure that the amount to be paid to the artist(s) falls in line with the policy when departments submit the request for an event to be held.”
