Johannesburg - Anglo American said on Friday that Phuthuma Nhleko, a non-executive director, had decided to step down from the board immediately.

Nhleko, who is also the MTN executive chairman, wanted to concentrate on his business interests in South Africa, Anglo said.

Last month, MTN was fined $5.2 billion (R74.82bn) by the Nigerian Communications Commission for not disconnecting 5.2 million unregistered users from its network.

MTN’s stock price had fallen 25 percent since the penalty was announced.
